Kitten Care
Caring for your new kitten
There is nothing cuter than a new kitten.
These simple guidelines will help you keep it happy and healthy.

Feeding
- Start solid kitten food by 6 weeks—specially formulated dry or canned meals meet all growth needs.
- No extra calcium needed. Moisten dry food with warm water for very young kittens.
- Feeding schedule:
- 6–8 weeks: 4 times daily
- 8–12 weeks: 3 times daily
- 12 weeks+: 2 times daily
- Always provide fresh water.
- Avoid cow’s milk to prevent diarrhoea.
Toilet training
- Kittens usually use a litter tray by 4–6 weeks.
- Place the tray in a quiet, accessible spot away from food and bedding.
- After meals or naps, gently guide your kitten to the tray.
- As it explores outdoors, you can move the tray outside to encourage good habits.
Worming
- Begin at 2 weeks with an all-wormer every 2 weeks until 12 weeks.
- From 12 weeks to 6 months: worm monthly.
- After 6 months: worm every 3 months against roundworms and tapeworms.
Flea control
Fleas year-round can cause anaemia and skin issues.

Desexing
- Schedule speying or neutering from 4 months.
- Prevents unwanted litters, roaming, fighting, and the spread of disease.
- Contrary to myth, female cats don’t benefit from having kittens.
Vaccination
- Core vaccine series (cat flu and enteritis):
- 8–9 weeks
- 3–4 weeks later
- ~16 weeks
- Immunity builds 2 weeks after the final shot.
- Booster at 6 months, then every 3 years, or yearly if your boarding facility requires this.
- Annual health checks are recommended, especially before boarding.
Microchipping
- Microchipping provides permanent ID via a sub-skin chip linked to a database.

Travel & vet visits
- Get your kitten used to its carrier at home—use familiar bedding, scents, and Feliway spray.
- Secure the carrier in the car and cover it if your kitten prefers darkness.
- Bring spare bedding for accidents.
- Reintroduce your cat to household pets gradually and under supervision.
Insurance
- Pet insurance can help cover unexpected health costs. Ask us for policy brochures.
